Rivals fight to host historic Bayeux work

- BY BEN GLAZE

THERESA May has hailed plans for the 950-year-old Bayeux Tapestry to be loaned to Britain as a scrap for the right to display the historic artwork began.

French President Emmanuel Macron has agreed to allow the piece, which depicts the Battle of Hastings in 1066, to leave France for the first time.

The PM told MPs: “It is very significant that the Bayeux Tapestry is coming to the UK and people are going to be able to see this.”

Now Bexhill and Battle MP Huw Merriman wants to host it locally, with Hastings MP Amber Rudd also tipped to make a case.

And the British Museum boss said it would be “honoured” to display it.

Hartwig Fischer added: “The Bayeux Tapestry is of huge importance.”
