ROBSON IS COURT IN CONTROVERSY

- BY NEIL MCLEMAN

LAURA ROBSON has become the first player to publicly call for the Margaret Court Arena at the Australian Open to be renamed.

Billie Jean King claimed she would refuse to play on Melbourne’s second court because of the latest outburst by Court (circle) against the LGBT community.

And Robson (above), who lost in the first round of the women’s doubles, said: “It’s a tough one because she achieved so much.

“But if someone is being asked to play on that court and they don’t feel comfortable, or people in the crowd feel awkward sitting on there, then people need to have a think about it and decide what is best going forward. I would lean towards renaming it.”

The former British No.1 played in a rainbow hair band in 2012 in support of equal rights after comments from Court. Robson, now 23, added: “Some of my mum’s friends were like, ‘Is Laura a lesbian?’. And she was like, ‘I’ll have to ask her’.”
