Theo: I had to leave to kick-start my career

- BY DAVID ANDERSON

THEO WALCOTT claims he had to quit Arsenal after 12 years to “reignite” his career after sealing his £20million switch to Everton.

Walcott says he knew he was no longer part of Gunners boss Arsene Wenger’s first-team plans and had not started a Premier League game since last April.

“It felt like it was time for me to move on,” said the England winger.

“It was sad, but it’s exciting at the same time.

“I want to reignite my career and push Everton to win things as they have done before.

“I want to be part of something and I feel like this place will offer me that.”

Walcott, 28, who has signed a three-and-a-half year deal, revealed his former England team-mate Wayne Rooney played a pivotal role in the transfer.

“I had numerous chats with Wayne and that was one massive factor, which really tempted me to come to Everton,” he added.

“He told me it was a great place to play football and a club on the up. Those are the reasons I came here.”
