CALL The Midwife star Victoria Yeates has seen hundreds of babies delivered in the hit drama, but she says she would rather adopt.

The actress, who returns for her fifth series on Sunday as Sister Winifred, has had a desire since childhood to take in youngsters in need of a home.

And she insisted being around co-star Helen George – Nurse Trixie – and her newborn daughter has not changed her mind.

Victoria, who ties the knot this year, said: “I’m not sure about babies. It hasn’t really made me broody being around Helen’s baby.

“If we do, we might adopt. There are so many kids that need homes.

“I’ve been working with a different charity called Cornerstone who film really good virtual reality scenarios to help adoptive and foster parents deal with their children in different ways.”

The star, 34, went on: “Ever since I was little, I don’t know why, my mum said I always wanted to adopt, and I was always worried about children that didn’t have anywhere to go.

“I would have this recurring nightmare, which probably came from watching Oliver Twist. I’d open the curtains and all these orphans were outside, hundreds of them that didn’t have homes. That was probably from when I was about seven.

“Obviously if I fell pregnant we would keep the baby. But in terms of what we want, maybe that is the right path for us.”

But Victoria is delighted to be back for series seven of Call the Midwife and said the show, starring Stephen McGann and Jenny Agutter, has been a “gamechanger” for her career.

Speaking of upcoming storylines, Victoria went on: “We tackle Huntington’s disease. I discover a child at school who is very disorientated and has bruises and we think she’s suffering from abuse, but it turns out she’s got Huntington’s chorea.”

She is also looking forward to her June wedding to long-term partner Paul Housden.

Victoria said: “It’s in the Pyrenees in the south of France. Paul is a musician, so there will be loads of musicians there.

“Hopefully there will be a maximum of 120. All the Call the Midwife girls will definitely be there, so that will be really exciting. I love them all so much, it’s going to be really good fun.”

Call the Midwife returns on Sunday at 8pm on BBC One.
