Ex-cop in £500k compo bid over ‘career-ending’ prank

- BY NEVILE AYLING

A DETECTIVE who claims a prank by a superior officer ended her career is suing for £500,000 in compensation.

Rebecca Jenkins, 33, alleges that she was the butt of a “culture of pranking” at Grays Police Station in Essex.

Her sergeant hid her phone in a ceiling void in July 2012, a court heard. She climbed on a desk to get it and fell, damaging her knee.

Her barrister, Andy Roy, said she suffered acute pain and depression. She gave up her frontline role and Essex Police dismissed her last October. Ms Jenkins, of Wickford, Essex, said: “There were always tricks being played.” Lawyers for the force dispute her injuries and said Sergeant Alan Blakesley played a good-natured prank. They said he also told her not to climb on her desk as he would get the phone himself. The Central London county court hearing continues.
