Parent’s failure of care

- BY MIRROR’S ALISON PHILLIPS

A PARENT has just two jobs to do. To love their child, and to keep them safe.

And no matter how much this mum may love her daughter she has failed terribly to keep her safe.

I don’t believe for one moment this case would have got as far as it has unless the authorities felt the mother was being negligent or reckless regarding her daughter’s health.

Allowing – or enabling – your child to become “dangerously” overweight is no different to allowing your child to take “dangerous” drugs or be locked in a room with “dangerous” dogs.

For whatever reason, this mother has put her daughter’s life at risk over a long period.

And for that reason she has forfeited the right to be a parent.

This is a terribly sad situation for both parent and child.

But far sadder would be for this girl to die or be permanently damaged by returning home.
