ON THIS DAY 55 YEARS AGO (1963)

We announced the death of Labour leader Hugh Gaitskell, aged 56, reporting that wife, Dora, held his hand at the end. Gaitskell, who had autoimmune disease lupus, had been admitted to hospital two weeks previously with a lung condition.

52 YEARS AGO (1966)

Indira Gandhi became India’s first and only female PM to date. As daughter of first leader Jawaharlal Nehru, she pledged she would strive to create a climate of peace.

27 YEARS AGO (1990)

Former England cricket captain Mike Gatting led a rebel tour of South Africa, defying the internatio­nal sporting ban against the country’s Apartheid regime. The tour created a storm of protests and eventually had to be abandoned.
