ASDA and Aldi joining Waitrose in banning sales of energy drinks to young people is a huge boost for the Daily Mirror and Jamie Oliver campaign.

Cans and bottles packing strong caffeine and sugar punches need to be consumed responsibl­y by adults – let alone the young – but, as with alcohol and tobacco, restrictin­g them to the young is sensible.

Hopefully other chains and individual shops will follow voluntaril­y. But we warn the foot-draggers that if they put a few pennies’ profit before the wellbeing of future generation­s there’s no shortage of MPs ready to do their duty.
