THE ONE TO CROTCH
Everyone who watched TV in the 1970s will have felt strangely nostalgic hearing of the death of Peter Wyngarde who played the inimitable sleuth Jason King. Nostalgic for a time when men could get away with wearing trousers whose crotches were even tighter than the massive knots around their neck. When males looked on in envy at a stunning moustache and sideburn combination they could never hope to grow, and females lusted over a handsome devil they could never hope to attract due to his being known in the business as Petunia Winegum. And nostalgic for a time when hard-living actors uttered lines like Wyngarde did, which came from a real place: “A bit too early for coffee… I think I’ll have Scotch.” RIP, you suave sod.
