C of E plea to cut abortion over Down’s
CHURCH leaders are to consider a campaign aimed at cutting the number of abortions on women carrying children with Down’s Syndrome.
The Church of England Synod will hear a motion calling for expectant mums to be given “comprehensive, unbiased information” about their options.
It comes amid NHS plans to roll out a blood test for Down’s in high-risk mums-to-be.
A report for the Synod in London next month says the tests mean “the place within society of people with Down’s Syndrome [is] now under question”.
The Rev Dr Brendan McCarthy, CoE adviser on medical ethics, said: “It is difficult to say we value you, if people like you disappear completely.”
