Dear Donny

- DONNY SHERIDAN

Q What radiator paint would you use that doesn’t turn yellow? Mike Martin, by email

A I have used Blackfriar Quick Drying Radiator Paint and the radiators are still brilliant white and have not turned yellow. This particular paint is also very hard when cured so it does not scratch or mark.

Q I have recently had a garden wall built and plan to paint it during the summer when it has fully dried out. Is there a specialist paint I can use under top coat to stop possible damp showing through? Winnie Byrne, by email

A Walls get wet from rising damp, rain and, if it’s a retaining wall from behind too. If the wall has been built with all these factors in mind, just use a good quality external paint such as Dulux Weathershield. If the wall gets damp once painted then the paint will blister from behind and flake off.

Q I have damp in two of my bedrooms in my bungalow. When there is a frost or snow the floor and walls are very wet. It seems to be coming up through the concrete floor. We have had extra air bricks put in and the outside walls are dry. Can you suggest anything else? Mrs Susan Dent, by email

A Sounds like condensation forming on the cold surfaces. The concrete floor needs to be insulated and, probably, underfloor heating installed. If the wall is cold you will need to install a radiator there or insulate the wall.

Q I bought a 10x6 shed four years ago and always get rainwater coming through roof, despite a double layer of felt. Can you help? Tony Jackson, by email

A If the overlap is about 200mm I don’t understand how the water is getting through. Use timber strips to hold the felt down or just try felt nails.
