‘World’s deadliest spider’ in my Asda bananas
SCARE Critter in Neil’s pack A SHOPPER has told of his shock at finding what he believes is the world’s most venomous spider in a packet of Asda bananas.
Neil Langley, 52, did not spot the intruder – ID’d by him as a deadly Brazilian wandering spider – until he was having lunch at work.
The administrative assistant, of Bilston, Wolverhampton, said: “I’m not scared of spiders but the thought of having one of the world’s deadliest creatures so close to you is a bit unnerving.”
Colleagues at the Department of Work and Pensions rang the RSPCA and the spider is now at Bristol Zoo. The species is still unconfirmed. Asda said: “We sell one billion bananas every year and each one is washed, sprayed and checked. The chance of finding a spider is incredibly low. It’s even less likely a tropical spider could survive.”
