JAMBOS IN DERBY CUP JOY AT LAST

-

HEARTS finally enjoyed Edinburgh derby glory as they beat Hibernian for the first time in 10 attempts.

Sub Don Cowie (above) got a touch on Christophe Berra’s 87th-minute header and the ball just spun across the line despite John McGinn’s attempts to keep it out.

It was a first win over their bitter rivals since August 2014 and made it third time lucky after defeats to Hibs in the Scottish Cup in each of the last two seasons.

It ensured a fifth-round tie with Albion Rovers or St Johnstone.

Cowie (above) said: “It’s been well documented that we’ve struggled against them, especially in the cup, so it was nice to win.

“A club this size needs to be challenging for trophies, so it’s sweet.

“We want to get to the latter stages of the competition.”

Hibs boss Neil Lennon said: “We were unlucky and it’s a very difficult pitch to play football on and it suits Hearts more than us.

“We can’t win every game, but it is a major disappointment to go out of the cup.”

Highland League Fraserburgh and Rangers will meet again a week on Wednesday after their match was called off. The winners will travel to Ayr in the fifth round.

Celtic, who crushed Brechin City 5-0, will play Partick Thistle at home in an all-Glasgow affair while another Highland League side – Brora Rangers – will travel to Kilmarnock.

Brora chairman William Powrie joked: “That’s what we really needed – a 500-mile trip to add to our ever increasing carbon footprint.

“We will travel in hope rather than expectation and thoroughly enjoy the experience.”
