‘Defence cut in polls race’

PHILIP Hammond has been accused of allowing the armed forces to shrink because there are not “enough votes in defence”.

The Chancellor should be thinking of the “next generation” rather than the next election, said Tory Defence Select Committee chairman Julian Lewis as he slammed cuts.

But a Treasury source insisted last night: “Philip is a huge advocate of the armed forces.”
