GAZING into his partner’s eyes and locked in an embrace, it’s easy to see why judges believed Max Evans may have feelings for Ale Izquierdo…
But the 34-year-old insisted the pair’s closeness during Dancing on Ice is purely down to “chemistry” and his girlfriend Lauren Jamieson has nothing to worry about.
Rugby hunk Max spoke out after judge Ashley Banjo hinted at a romance when he declared last week: “I don’t know what’s going on between the two of you…”
But the former Scotland and Harlequins player laughed off the idea. He said: “Lauren is a dancer so she understands the need for chemistry to bring more to the performance. “Our performance was full of romance and love. It was a compliment that the judges said we had such great chemistry. “Lauren was buzzing that we smashed it. She’s so supportive.” Lauren, whose brother is Olympic swimmer Michael Jamieson, is trying to make her partner more graceful on the ice. Max said: “My hands have only been used to hurt and grab people. She gave me a few tips with my hands.”
The show favourite admitted he did not follow judge Jason Gardiner’s advice to quit sex over Christmas in preparation for the competition. He said: “That was a tough ask.”
His brother Thom, also a rugby player, has been persuading the wardrobe department to let them show more of his body on screen.
Max, who performed to Take That’s Relight My Fire with Ale in last night’s disco-themed show, said: “It was funny. The more skin I show, the more I’ve achieved.” The pair scored 19 for their dance. Jayne Torville said the duo’s attempt to replicate one of her legendary moves was “ambitious”, but her skating partner Christopher Dean called it “under rehearsed”.
