Lecturer’s suicide over ‘exam cheats’ fear

-

KILLED HIMSELF Leigh Wilde A TEACHER turned whistleblower hanged himself the day he got a letter from bosses suspending him, an inquest heard.

Leigh Wilde, 45, had reported his concerns over exam cheating to Manchester College, where he was an automotive lecturer.

The married father of two also told the Institute of the Motor Industry, who began a probe.

He was said to have told his HR department that he believed some staff were taking tests to get higher marks for some students.

A week later, he was suspended and escorted from the building. He got a letter explaining the decision three days later and hanged himself in the garage at home in Stockport, Greater Manchester.

Mr Wilde’s wife, Carol, said after the South Manchester inquest that the letter outlined bullying claims.

His family deny the allegations. Mrs Wilde said later: “Manchester College repeatedly and fatally failed in its duty to my husband.“South Manchester Coroner Alison Mutch said the college should “minimise the risk” when taking a decision to suspend an employee.

The Manchester College said: “We note the coroner’s comments. We will respond appropriately.”

Verdict: suicide.
