Messy Brexit deal should go to vote

- FIONA PARKER Edited by

THERESA May couldn’t negotiate her way out of a paper bag, as her latest attempts to get Emmanuel Macron onside over Brexit prove (Mirror, Jan 19).

How naive she must be to presume there could be a special deal for the UK’s financial services industry.

The problem is these arrogant Tories greatly overstate Britain’s place in the world and refuse to see Brexit will further undermine our position economically, putting British businesses and jobs at risk.

At the very least, there should be another referendum on the terms of Brexit. Steve Birchall, South East London # EU President Jean-Claude Juncker may have stated the “the door is still open” to the EU, but I voted democratically to leave and that is that. It seems the EU Commission is hell bent on dragging out this whole process in the hope the British people will change their minds and hold a second referendum of which I want no part. We have offered to pay £39billion to speed things up, but to no avail. Therefore, Mrs May, it’s time to lay it on the line once and for all. There must be no second referendum and if the EU doesn’t stop dragging its feet we should reduce our financial offer. Grahame Champ, Cardiff # Leave won the largest vote in British history by the smallest of margins, creating a divided nation and putting the very existence of the UK at risk into the bargain.

It was a vote in which 60% of the over-65s voted Leave and 70% of the under25s voted Remain, with a sliding scale in between and obvious consequences for our democracy with future generations in mind. Not to mention those taken for a ride by a big red bus.

A say on the final deal with the option to stay in the EU if it’s nothing like what people were promised is now the way to go. John Haran Leigh-on-Sea, Essex How many more add-ons are there going to be on our Brexit Bill? And is being loaned the Bayeux tapestry, depicting our defeat by the French, really a great honour?

Perhaps we should lend France the Magna Carta, the founding principle of democracy, so the French can realise we voted out because of the very problem they have with migrants in Calais.

For the PM to attempt to do deals to appease separate EU governments is bad news for our negotiating team and undermines our position. ST Vaughan Yardley Wood, Birmingham What a complete mess the Tories have led this country into over Brexit. I believe everyone should have a vote now to stop this diabolical, ideologically-driven decision from going any further and damaging the country for generations. Cameron was idiotic to hold the referendum in the first place and he only did so to calm his Eurosceptic backbenchers. William Rothwell Easington Colliery Co Durham So, Mr Juncker reckons the UK can still do a EU-turn. Unless he and his EU cronies let us have control of our borders I will never change my vote.
