1,700 jobs to Tes-go

Managers face chop under cost cuts

-

TESCO is to axe another 1,700 jobs – the third big cull in the past seven months.

Staff were left fearing for their futures after the supermarket giant announced a purge of managers.

It is getting shot of all People Managers in 757 large stores, Compliance Managers in 667 big branches and Customer Experience Managers in 226 Extra stores.

Managers performing the first two roles in seven depots will also be hit.

Matt Davies, Tesco chief executive for the UK and Ireland, said: “These changes remove complexity and will deliver a simpler, more helpful experience for colleagues and customers.”

Tesco said it would “try to find roles within the business wherever possible” for those who are affected.

With that mind, Tesco is creating 900 new jobs in three new roles to take on some of the work being cut.

It follows Tesco’s plans announced last June to shed one in four head office staff – 1,200 jobs. That came just a week after the firm revealed it was closing a call centre in Cardiff, putting up to 1,100 jobs at risk. Just like now, bosses cited the need to “simplify” the business.

The job losses are part of a wider overhaul since Tesco group chief executive Dave Lewis – dubbed Drastic Dave while at Unilever – took charge in 2014.

Tesco, which has seen sales recover, is aiming to slash costs by £1.5billion by 2019/20.
