Who Dares Wins TV show saved my life

-

A CONTESTANT has told how taking part in an SAS challenge on TV saved his life from an 18-month addiction to booze.

Copywriter Amuz Sandhu, 32, says without Channel 4’s Who Dares Wins, he would still be downing up to three bottles of whisky a day.

He hit the booze hard after being diagnosed with bladder cancer two years ago, and drank more when he beat it. He said: “I didn’t really process it. I bottled it up.

“Once I got the all clear, I turned to drinking. I went out with the attitude of wanting to live life as I’d had such a close shave. There was a lot of partying. “I started going out on Friday afternoon and coming back on Sunday. I was on a huge downward spiral.” Amuz beat the disease after surgery in March 2016. But his partying had a huge effect on family life. He added: “It caused trouble at home, my wife was understandably worried. I was drinking heavily for 18 months.” After spotting an advert for this year’s show, Amuz applied as he had dreamed of joining the special forces as a kid.

When he was picked to take part, he knew he had to sort himself out.

The Birmingham dad of four said: “I wanted to do well and I decided to stop drinking. I cut down gradually but then, in the month before I flew out, I cut alcohol out completely.

The decision came as a relief to his wife and children – and he hasn’t touched a drop since, adding: “I am 99% certain I would still be on self-destruction if hadn’t done it.” Phew, that’s a bit of good news... ■ SAS: Who Dares Wins continues on Channel 4 on Sunday at 9pm.
