GERMANY CALLING, GARETH
GARETH SOUTHGATE will today discover England’s opponents in the new UEFA Nations League.
And they have got a 25 per cent chance of getting world champions Germany.
The revolutionary set-up has been brought in to try to scrap meaningless friendlies and England are likely to end up facing a better class of opponent.
England boss Southgate (above) and new Wales manager Ryan Giggs are in Lausanne, Switzerland for the draw for fixtures which will replace the traditional friendlies in the autumn.
England are in the top of four divisions made up of 55 countries which will have promotion and relegation. The Three Lions will be in a group of three teams which will play each other home and away in September and October.
They will face one of either Germany, Portugal, Belgium or Spain – and then one of Poland, Iceland, Croatia or Holland. They cannot play France, Switzerland or Italy.
League A will be split into four groups of three with the group winners contesting the semi-finals, third-place match and final in June 2019.
The four group wooden spoonists will be relegated to League B for the 2020 tournament.
Wales, Ireland and Northern Ireland are in League B and could all be drawn in the same group. Scotland are in League C.
