Robins show how to rock Prem giants

BRISTOL CITY’s fairy-tale League Cup run has finally come to an end.

But, providing the top-flight sides have been paying attention, their legacy should live on.

Because Lee Johnson’s unfazed side have shown in their thrilling journey to the last four that it pays to play against the big boys.

There has been no fear, caution or bus-parking from Bristol City against the Premier League’s giants. And they have been thoroughly rewarded with spectacular results and performances that will stay long in the memory.

Overcoming Manchester City over two legs proved a challenge too far – but top-flight teams should still take note. Some have faced the same calibre of opponents the Robins have, but been so scared that they forgot to attack.

Yet, after their stunning quarter-final win over Manchester United, one Bristol City player revealed how their approach can unsettle a giant.

Johnson (above) got his men to press and counter-attack United in numbers.

And when they had the ball, there was a patience to their play. No hit-andhope, long balls to ease the pressure.

“They just weren’t used to it,” said the Robins player. “They didn’t like it and couldn’t handle it.”

Johnson’s philosophy had paid off in their three previous winning ties against Premier League sides Watford, Stoke and Crystal Palace.

But there was no greater endorsement of his methods than the brilliant win against United.

And they gave City a real game in both legs of this semi-final, with brave displays at the Etihad and at home.

That wasn’t quite enough to earn them a place in the final.

But they bow out having provided lessons that some in the league above could well learn.
