The NHS is not just one of this country’s crown jewels – it’s the best of British. What could be more humane and civilised than medical care, free at the point of delivery?

I saw the NHS at its best when my father, Colin, was struck down by Pick’s disease, an early-onset dementia, and passed away at 64. It reduced me to tears when I used to visit him at Maelor Hospital in Wrexham, and he would look right through me. But the care he was afforded was exemplary.

The day we take our NHS for granted – or break it up for private firms to make a profit – is the day we lose part of our soul.
