ON THIS DAY
53 YEARS AGO (1965) We told how Sir Winston Churchill, who died from a stroke aged 90, would be laid to rest at Bladon parish church, Oxfordshire. The Queen wrote to his wife Lady Clementine telling of her “inexpressible grief”. 94 YEARS AGO (1924) The inaugural Winter Olympics were held in Chamonix, France. Organised by the French, the IOC took charge in 1925 and held the games every four years. 47 YEARS AGO (1971) General Idi Amin seized power from Ugandan President Milton Obote. Obote, who led the country to independence in 1962, had been at a conference in Singapore when the coup was staged. Brutal Amin, a former national heavyweight boxing champ, had been promoted to armed forces chief by Obote.
