ANYONE FOR THIS TENNYS?

- BY NEIL McLEMAN

TENNYS SANDGREN has accused the media of “hastening hell” by demonising his political views.

The world No.97, who reached the quarter-final at the Australian Open, has attracted more attention for his social media activity than for beating big guns Stan Wawrinka and Dominic Thiem.

The 26-year-old from Tennessee follows Tommy Robinson, the former English Defence League leader, and has retweeted a video from white nationalist Nicholas Fuentes. Serena Williams tweeted: “Turns channel” when Sandgren’s quarterfinal match with Hyeon Chung started yesterday.

Sandgren (above) has insisted he does not support the alt-right and, addressing a press conference after his 6-4 7-6 6-3 defeat, he read a statement saying: “You seek to put people in these little boxes so that you can order the world in your preconceived ideas. You strip away any individuality for the sake of demonising by way of the collective.

“You dehumanise with pen and paper and turn neighbour against neighbour. You may actually find you’re hastening the hell you wish to avoid, the hell we all wish to avoid.”
