-

AROUND 4,750 people are living on the streets, the highest number of the decade.

Figures have rocketed 73% from the 2,744 in the autumn of 2014. It is most rife in London, with 1,137 rough sleepers recorded last year, the first time it has hit four figures.

The charity Crisis said: “It is truly a catastrophe that in a country as prosperous as this, more and more people are forced to sleep in dangerous and freezing conditions.”

A spokesman for Theresa May said: “We are providing over £1billion of funding.”

A third Tory councillor has quit the party group in protest at leader Simon Dudley’s call to clear Windsor of beggars before Prince Harry’s wedding to Meghan Markle in May.
