Woman’s £12K compo over sex discrimination wage
A SALES manager who was paid less than a male colleague doing the same job has won £12,854 in compensation.
Michelle Smith sued her former employer for sexual discrimination over the £7,680 difference in salary.
An employment tribunal heard she earned £36,267 a year while John Tucker was on £43,947 at Neilson Financial Services in Slough, Berks. He also had five more holiday days than her, the tribunal at Reading heard. Judge Andrew Gumbiti-
TRIUMPH Michelle Smith Zimuto ruled in her favour and awarded the payout to cover the earnings Miss Smith missed out on.
He said: “There were no material interests other than her sex that prevented her from earning the same as Mr Tucker. The claim succeeds on the grounds of sexual discrimination under the Equal Pay Act.”
Miss Smith, of Slough, refused to comment as she left. But she told the tribunal she would have had to work for eight years in her role to get the same benefits as male colleagues.
