The Vanishing of Ethan Carter
Perennially late to the party when it comes to indie game releases, the Xbox One is finally getting a version of The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, released back in 2014 for PC and 2015 for PS4.
This first-person mystery game puts you in the shoes of psychic detective Paul Prospero as he explores part of a small village to uncover the truth behind the disappearance of Ethan and his family.
A lush, highly detailed environment makes for an incredibly immersive world to wander about in. However, the game’s initial warning that it “does not hold your hand” rings too true, with some of its puzzles feeling a tad obtuse.
If you have the patience for a lot of wandering about and backtracking there’s an intriguing story to experience here, but the expertly crafted atmosphere isn’t always enough to mask the occasionally underwhelming gameplay.
