Never about the money for generous Jimmy

-

SUCH has been the welter of tributes to Jimmy Armfield, apologies if you have heard or read one of my favourite nuggets.

Back in 2016, as part of the 50th anniversary celebrations, members of Everton listened to fans when their motto was omitted England’s World Cup-winning squad were given £1,966 by the Football Association.

On receiving his windfall, Jimmy (right), a non-playing reserve in ’66, split it four ways. In equal amounts, it went to Age UK Blackpool, Trinity Hospice, Lancashire Partnership Against Crime and St Peter’s church, where Jimmy played the organ.

It was his professional life, football, but it was never about the money.
