FIDEL Castro’s eldest son has killed himself after battling months of depression.

Angel Castro Diaz-Balart, 68, was being treated as an outpatient at the time of his death.

Cuba’s official newspaper Granma said: “Diaz-Balart, who had been attended by a group of doctors for several months due to profound depression, killed himself this morning.” Diaz-Balart was known as Fidelito, or Little Fidel, because of his likeness to his father.

He was the only son of Castro and his first wife Mirta Diaz-Balart. The pair split before the Cuban revolution in 1959 and she took the child to New York.

During a trip to Mexico to visit his dad, Castro kidnapped Fidelito. The Cuban leader remarried and his son became part of a larger family.

Fidelito studied in the Soviet Union then became a nuclear physicist. In the 80s Castro made him leader of nuclear power and he planned to build a Russian-backed plant.

But the Berlin Wall fell in 1989 and Moscow’s cash dried up, leaving just its abandoned shell.

Fidelito was sacked by his dad. But he was later appointed scientific adviser to new leader and his uncle Raul Castro. Fidel died in 2016.
