Mind the gaps Arsene
AT face value, Arsenal had a good transfer window.
Shipping out the unsettled Alexis Sanchez, bringing in Henrikh Mkhitaryan and PierreEmerick Aubameyang, plus Mesut Ozil signing a new contract, was decent business all round.
But Arsenal’s big problem is not their lack of pretty football or creativity up front – under Arsene Wenger, that has never been an issue. They do, however, desperately need shoring up at the back.
It’s no good beating Chelsea in a semi-final one week and coming badly unstuck at Swansea the next.
Defensively, they are still a soft touch – and Wenger’s last-minute £12million bid for Jonny Evans (above) smacked of a frivolous after-thought.
If Arsenal are serious about challenging for the title in future, they need to put the foundations in order instead of only repairing the roof. Artistic football wins you nothing if you keep leaving the back gate open.
