Stats prove Tory NHS destruction
THERESA May arrogantly boasts that our crippled NHS is the best healthcare system in the world, so how can it be that Britain only came 14th compared with 27 other EU nations in respect of some cancer survival rates (Mirror, January 31)?
In the Commons, the PM spouts that she is recruiting more doctors and nurses than ever and providing the necessary funding for the NHS, but official statistics show otherwise. It’s plain to see Mrs May’s rhetoric is just that, words without foundation.
When will she admit she is overseeing the demise of our cherished NHS by its deliberate underfunding? It’s obvious the NHS crisis is spiralling out of control. Bill Cook, Teignmouth, Devon
The latest NHS scandal that it is failing some cancer patients, should prove once and for all that our health is not safe in Tory hands. The current situation in the NHS is reminiscent of the late 1980s when the Tories were guilty of totally mismanaging our precious health service. Thankfully, they were replaced in government by Labour, thus preventing them from killing it off. This Tory government needs replacing as the last thing we need is privatisation destroying another essential service. Gordon Legg Southampton
We were shocked but unsurprised by the new study highlighting that the UK has one of the worst cancer survival rates in Europe. This is particularly the case for brain tumour
patients and underlines what we have been campaigning for over many years. This is mainly due to the disparity of cancer research funding with just 1% of the national spend being allocated to this devastating disease.
Research into brain tumours is at a turning point with a landmark speech delivered to the House of Lords last week. These uneven levels of investment cannot continue. Sue Farrington Smith MBE, Chief Executive, Brain Tumour Research
It was shocking to read that Britain is lagging far behind other European countries when it comes to survival rates for some forms of cancer. It is shameful when thousands of people’s lives are cut short because this government is in complete denial about the crisis in our NHS. We deserve
better. We need to get rid of the Tories – and soon. J Dobson, Widnes, Cheshire
The cancer survival rates for the UK against the five largest European nations listed in the Mirror were eye-watering. On the one hand, the Government is bombarding us with information on healthy living, then on the other, the unfortunates who contract some awful diseases, such as cancer, despite trying to abide by this advice, are often left high and dry. Sam Johnson, Blackpool
I have been reading your articles on the NHS with interest, but can people please stop referring to it as free? For those of us who work and pay our fair share of tax and National Insurance, the health service is not free. I wouldn’t mind paying more to keep this wonderful service away from private hands. C German, Lincoln
Every working and middle-class voter who voted Tory last time should be made to read the Mirror’s coverage of the state of our NHS. They voted for its demise. Arthur Poole Macclesfield Cheshire
