C4, 8pm “Girls, girls, girls, girls!” A gaggle of five-year-old girls have just been asked, “Who’s better, boys or girls?” and there are screeches of delight.
But not all of the children in the all-girl classroom are pleased. Eva would like a boy to arrive to “spice things up”, while self-confessed tomboy Jet finds it hard to make friends with girls who don’t like football or fighting.
This one-off special coincides with the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, aiming to reveal what it’s like to be a girl in 2018.
As ever, child development experts Dr Elizabeth Kilbey and Laverne Antrobus watch and analyse from the wings, as cameras follow the kids around a classroom.
And some of the scenes do reveal a lot about gender stereotypes and how girls see themselves. “Girls wear uniforms and fairy clothes,” says Darcy.
While Jet’s parents reveal at one point she felt that being a girl was holding her back. INSIDE STORY Behind the scenes at Ikea
