Asda axes 5p bags to fight plastic waste

- BY RUKI SAYID

ASDA is axing 5p carrier bags to boost the battle against plastic waste.

The move means shoppers will have to buy a stronger 9p bag if they forget to take their own.

The supermarket chain said it will stop stocking the cheaper bags at tills by the end of the year and has already cut back on the numbers stores stock.

Tesco ditched its 5p carriers last summer in favour of 10p bags. Sainsbury’s replaces its 5p and 10p bags for free if they are ripped or broken.

Asda’s bags rethink was among a raft of changes, which include cutting 178 tonnes of polystyrene from landfill by using cardboard for pizza boards.

A spokesman said: “Card pizza boards will make a difference very quickly”
