WIGGLE ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT ON LAST CAP

- BY ALEX SPINK

RICHARD WIGGLESWORTH does not have fond memories of his last England cap.

The year was 2015 and the World Cup hosts had been eliminated from their own tournament yet still had the fixture against Uruguay to fulfil.

“It was one of the worst weeks of my life,” said the Saracens scrum-half (left), who has replaced injured Ben Youngs and goes straight into the squad to face Wales.

“There is no point sugarcoating it – you put that much effort into something and you mess it up. That is the way that it is, that’s life.”

Wigglesworth, 34, is the oldest in Eddie Jones’ squad by more than two years yet club-mate Maro Itoje warned Wales: “He’s old enough to be my dad, but he can outrun me! He’s one of the hardest working and fittest guys I know. Don’t ever run next to Richard because he’ll make you look terrible.”

Wigglesworth has taken inspiration from former teammates Neil de Kock and Peter Stringer, who played until they were 38 and 40. “I’m not hanging on,” he added. “I’m just trying to get better.”
