Crown green bowlers introduce alcohol crackdown to ban louts
BY VICKY SMITH
THE genteel game of bowls is being hit by a rise in boozed-up players and spectators.
A crackdown on antisocial behaviour has now been voted in.
People can be fined and banned if they break the new rules.
The code of conduct has been introduced by Shropshire Crown Green Bowls Association for clubs across the county. Outgoing president Mike Caddick said: “It started to creep in a bit last year, mostly among spectators.
“They were being over-enthusi- astic mainly as a result of alcohol. When it starts to get too noisy and too personal with the bad language it spoils everybody’s enjoyment.
“The general opinion is that it is not wanted in bowls.” He said one player has already been banned from competing or spectating because of antisocial behaviour.
Mr Caddick said: “He turned up several times and disrupted proceedings. It wasn’t as enjoyable as it should have been.
“Hopefully the action taken by the county will deter incidents.”
