Tory donor tells May: Lead over Brexit or face disaster
THERESA May has been warned by a top Tory donor her party will be “decimated” if she fails to lead on Brexit.
Amid anger the PM is dithering over Britain’s future relationship with the EU, Sir John Hall, former owner of Newcastle United, said: “Show us leadership. This is the time.”
Mrs May, who is expected to give two speeches in three weeks on Europe, also received another stark message from ex-minister Anna Soubry. Asked if there were enough MPs ready to defeat “the kind of Brexit the PM wants”, she told BBC1’s The Andrew Marr Show: “If she’s not careful, yes.” Lib Dem MP Layla Moran claimed yesterday most people wish Brexit “would stop” and there was a “real chance” it could be halted. The National Farmers’ Union was one of 36 food production bodies calling for free trade with the EU to be maintained.
