Sparkies & brickies average £31k
RISING pay for plumbers and electricians is boosting the trades as a career choice for young people, say experts.
Wages for apprentices are £2,000 above the national average, research found.
Qualified plumbers, electricians and bricklayers are raking in £31,000 on average.
The annual salary of a trades worker will top £27,500 by 2022, said DIY chain Screwfix.
The report comes after plumber Stephen Fry, 34, revealed he earns £210,000 a year running his plumbing firm in Central London. Graham Bell, Screwfix chief executive, said: “The research supports our belief that a trade apprenticeship is a strong career choice for young people in this country. “Apprenticeships lead to careers in highly skilled jobs – which are in high demand – and therefore will attract a healthy, competitive salary. “For young people starting out they offer a great career choice without the burden of large debts from university fees.”
