Too embarrassed to go for a smear test

-

Dear Coleen

I’ve been sent an invite for cervical screening. I’ve decided I want to go, but I just feel so embarrassed at the prospect of actually having it done.

How will I manage?

Coleen says

I think most women have that apprehension – it’s pretty normal. I’ll let you into a secret, I still feel a little embarrassed when I go for an appointment and I’ve had lots of smear tests over the years. However, I can honestly say that once I meet the nurse and the test gets underway, those feelings disappear pretty quickly.

I’ve usually been seen by one of the practice nurses and they’re always really lovely and put me at ease. It’s also quite apparent that nothing fazes them – they’ve seen it all before and you’ll be one of many people through their door that day. The test is also pretty quick – it’ll be over before you know it.

But it’s OK to tell the nurse or doctor that you feel a little nervous, so they can support you during the appointment. And if it’ll make you feel better, take your mum or a friend with you for some moral support.
