1861: Football teams from the neighbouring Sheffield and Hallam clubs met at Sheffield to play the first inter-club match. 2004: Malcolm Glazer (below) increased his Manchester United plc stakeholding to 16.31 per cent. The American tycoon bought a controlling stake in the club in May 2005. 2008: Dwain Chambers won his battle to be part of the British team at the World Indoor Championships in Valencia, even though the UK Athletics selection committee were “unanimous in their desire not to select him”.
