Wenger is out of Lac in attack

- BY JOHN CROSS

ARSENE WENGER has seen his Europa League plans suffer a major setback after losing Alexandre Lacazette for up to six weeks.

The striker underwent knee surgery yesterday to solve an ongoing issue and although the operation was described as a success it comes as a serious setback for the Gunners.

Boss Wenger said: “He will be out for five weeks. It’s a massive blow for us.”

Lacazette had lost his place to Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, but the France star would have started in the Europa League with the new signing cup-tied.

It would have also allowed Lacazette some much needed game time in Europe to help get his confidence up after a disappointing start to his Arsenal career.

Arsenal sold Olivier Giroud, Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez in January and, despite the arrival of Aubameyang, they are left with few offensive options in the Europa League.

It could leave Danny Welbeck set to lead the attack at Ostersund tomorrow in what has become another important game for Wenger and his future at the Emirates.
