Rough sleeper dies right next to Parliament

-

A LABOUR MP talked of the “shame” he felt after a homeless man died in freezing overnight temperatures outside Parliament.

Paramedics were called to Westminster Tube station shortly after 7am yesterday but despite their efforts he died on the cold subway floor during morning rush hour. Labour MP Neil Coyle, who co-chairs the all-party parliamentary group on homelessness, told the Mirror the man had “died literally on the doorstep of Parliament”.

He added: “We should all be ashamed and examine hard the causes of his death.” The man, believed to be in his 40s, was thought to have been regularly given hot food by the staff of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn.

Mr Corbyn asked for flowers to be left at the scene. He tweeted: “It’s time all MPs took up this moral challenge and properly housed everyone.” Scotland Yard said the death was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

Rough sleeping in England has rocketed from 1,768 to 4,751 since the Tories regained power in 2010.
