Scam fleeces pensioner of £10k
The fake fraud investigation scam has struck again.
It occurs when crooks posing as police or bank staff convince customers to withdraw savings as part of a probe into fraud or counterfeiting, often threatening arrest if the victims don’t comply.
Gang members or couriers then meet the victims to collect the money, usually saying that it will be taken to a police station for safe-keeping. The Metropolitan Police say that a poor chap aged 92 lost £10,000 to the scam and have released this CCTV image of a man they want to contact.
Detective Constable James Kapp, of Westminster CID, said the callers claimed to work for “the Barclays Fraud Squad”.
“The victim soon realised that he had been the victim of a fraud, but by then it was too late,” he said.
