ARCHBISHOP Desmond Tutu has quit scandal-hit Oxfam, slamming the “immorality” of staff in crisis-hit countries.

The retired South African church leader, 86, was an ambassador for the charity hit by claims its aid workers had sex with prostitutes in earthquake-hit Haiti.

His office said in a statement: “The Archbishop is deeply disap- pointed by allegations of immorality and possible criminality...

“He is also saddened by the impact on the many thousands of good people who have supported Oxfam’s righteous work.”

It came as it emerged an Oxfam worker sacked over the Haiti allegations was re-hired in Ethiopia – a move described by the charity as a “serious error”. Oxfam chief Mark Goldring and trustee Caroline Thomson will be grilled by MPs next week.

The man at the centre of the scandal yesterday moaned about its impact on him. Roland van Hauwermeiren, 68, said: “It is especially bad that my family no longer want to see me.” He said: “It is not that I deny everything. But there are many lies and exaggerations.” Oxfam said 1,270 donors cancelled direct debits in just three days – over double the monthly average of 600.
