We need to find a fix, not fine

- BY CONSUMER FEATURES EDITOR

CAN you blame parents for whipping kids out of school to avoid hefty holiday costs?

This week mums and dads will fork out up to nine times more for the same break taken a week later, while summer getaways can soar by more than £1,000.

Thousands of families say they can’t afford to go abroad when the kids are off.

Travel firms say they are also worried about distortions in demand and prices.

They claim most companies only make a profit during school holidays.

A petition signed by more than 200,000 people urged the Government to cap travel operators’ prices.

Some schools have now started shifting holidays. Others are considering moving a week from Easter or summer to May.

We need to find a way to enable families to take a reasonably priced break without fear of a fine.
