Eck:I’ll take us back... to glory

- BY GARY RALSTON

ALEX McLEISH has vowed to win back the Tartan Army as he declared the Scotland job his destiny.

At Hampden yesterday, McLeish insisted he has unfinished business, more than a decade after he walked out to join Birmingham City.

The SFA turned to the 59-year-old after being snubbed by Michael O’Neill and Walter Smith – and the former Rangers boss and Aberdeen defensive legend has a two-year deal with orders to qualify for Euro 2020.

Scotland fans have been widely critical of McLeish’s appointment, but he has pledged to win them over by leading the national team to its first major tournament since France 98.

McLeish said: “I believe I’m the guy for the job. I had to go for it because I believe it’s my destiny.

“I can understand why fans are unhappy. You get divided opinion, but the cure for dissent is performing.

“It’s up to me to get the guys onside. There’s unfinished business.

“When I left last time I wondered if I would get another chance to be involved in something spectacular in terms of qualifying for a finals.

“It’s looking that way now, as we haven’t been at a tournament for 22 years. It’s something of a massive feat but it is within our grasp.”
