HAMMER OF THE SCOTS!

West Ham’s Glaswegian boss Moyes to give England ‘tips’ ahead of Calcutta Cup clash

EDDIE JONES has chosen the week of Scotland-England to invite David Moyes into the Red Rose camp.

Four days before rugby’s oldest rivals contest the Calcutta Cup, West Ham’s Glaswegian-born boss will be welcomed into England’s inner sanctum.

England forwards coach Steve Borthwick (inset, below) said: “I’m sure we will be able to learn from David. He will watch training and then we will sit down, pick his brains and see what we can learn.”

Moyes’ presence, along with his Hammers assistant Stuart Pearce, is down to Jones’ continuing fascination with Premier League football.

England manager Gareth Southgate and Chelsea boss Antonio Conte visited the rugby team’s high-performance training base last year.

Jones told me last season: “Motivating top footballers to play as a team, to engage these guys to give you more, has to be the most fascinating job in the world.

“Everyone gives 97 per cent. It’s that last three per cent that hurts, that’s hard.

“I’m intrigued by how Pep Guardiola, Jose Mourinho and Jurgen Klopp find that extra three per cent.”

Jones (inset, top), whose England side has lost just once in 25 Tests, watches Match of the Day to study the body language of top managers. Hooker Jamie George said: “We can learn from football with regards to what culture they are trying to produce and how they deal with setbacks. “They are definitely under the microscope and they have to deal with a lot of pressure just like we do, as there’s a lot of hype around the Six Nations.” But George, an Aston Villa fan, believes football can now also take tips from how England rugby goes about its business.

“It’s a sign of us doing things well that people are interested to come and have a look at how we do things,” he said, recalling Conte’s interest in the speed work undertaken by England’s backs on the day of his visit.

“It spurs you on to keep doing what you’re doing, to keep improving and pioneering.” England name their team on Thursday and last night reported a clean bill of health, with playmaker Owen Farrell fit to return to the scene of his first cap.

Farrell has racked up 55 games for England and never lost to the Scots.
