Hero Grigg insists beating Pep’s giants pips 2013 Wembley triumph
WILL GRIGG claims Wigan’s giantkilling of Manchester City is even bigger than their famous 2013 FA Cup win.
The Latics’ final victory over City at Wembley when they were in the Premier League is the undoubted greatest moment in their history. But match-winner Grigg says their latest success eclipses that achievement because the clubs are now two leagues apart. “Yeah, I think it’s bigger because we’re a League One team and they are probably the best team in Europe at the moment,” said the Wigan striker. “It’s got to be the biggest upset in a long time. They are flying, the quality of players they’ve got, they are an unbelievable side, scoring goals for fun. So for us to beat them on our patch is something special. “It was an unbelievable performance – everyone to a man, including the substitutes. “The gaffer and his staff worked really hard all week on a game plan. We have stopped probably the best team in Europe at the moment.” Grigg, 26, has won promotions with Brentford and Wigan in his career, as well as going to Euro 2016 with Northern Ireland.
Yet he says scoring the winner against Pep Guardiola’s side to end their Quadruple hopes tops the lot. “The promotions are up there, but in terms of a single game and a single moment, this is probably it.
“I have scored against Bournemouth and West Ham on this run, but City are probably the best team in Europe at the minute and we’ve beaten them 1-0, and I got the goal. So this is probably my highlight.
“It’s my most special goal in terms of the opposition. The calibre of their side at the moment makes it pretty special.”
Grigg is now the leading scorer in the FA Cup with seven goals after Rochdale’s Ian Henderson had briefly moved level with him.
And he is confident he can add to his tally when Paul Cook’s side face Southampton in the quarter-finals at the DW.
“I was a bit gutted when Ian Henderson scored on Sunday!” smiled Grigg, who has 16 goals in total. “So it’s nice to be top again and another great game gives me a chance of adding to it.
“We’ve beaten Bournemouth, West Ham and now Man City. We feel we can beat anyone at the moment and we’ll go into the Southampton game full of belief.”
