ITV bosses have stopped giving stars gifts when they hit major milestones on Coronation Street, according to actress Bev Callard.

Her 30th anniversary as barmaid Liz McDonald is next year, but she said: “They give you nothing. They used to, but they don’t now.”

Bev, 60, added: “I’m going to tell them you should get something like a clock.”

The actress and her partner, Jon McEwan, 52, were at the MQ: Transforming Mental Health reception at the Commons on Tuesday. In the past 10 years, Bev has suffered depression, which has led to time off from Corrie.

She told how friends found it difficult to deal with her illness. She said: “I had ultra-close friends saying they “were there for you”, but where? You tell people and they say, ‘Oh gosh, that’s terrible,’ then you are in the worst of it and they are unavailable.”

But she had been inundated with messages of support from the public after talking about her condition. She said: “The nation has been amazing. I hope speaking out helps people.”
