Parole boss: Tell victims reasons for release

- BY MARK JEFFERIES

THE head of the Parole Board said he believes victims of crimes should be told why a prisoner is being released.

Martin Jones insisted John Worboys “no longer represents a risk” but admitted he could not be 100% sure freed criminals would not reoffend. He told an ITV documentary: “We have a set of detailed reasons explaining our reasoning, but we are prevented by law from telling people those reasons.

“I don’t think that’s sustainable, in particular for victims. That needs to change so we can explain why we make the decisions we do. Most of the time we get it right. But of course you can never be sure.” Probation chief Sonia Crozier apologised on the programme for the way Worboys’ victims found out he was to be released.

John Worboys: The Taxi Cab Rapist with Susanna Reid is on ITV tonight at 9pm.
