boss Carlos Carvalhal (below) has a way with words but, after the FA Cup fifth-round draw at Sheffield Wednesday, when both sides admitted they would rather take penalties than play again, he surpassed himself.

He said: “Replays are a bit like the Police Academy films. First there is one and then there is too many.” Who could argue? Surely not the FA, who now have the final three rounds decided by extra-time and shootouts. So why not earlier rounds, if both sides agree they’d rather take their chance from the spot than play an extra game? Because, as anyone who’s seen Police Academy 4: Citizens On Patrol can testify, many sequels are dire. And pointless.
